According to M. Hasna, sustainability is a function of
social, economic, technological and ecological themes. The satisfaction of
human needs and aspirations has always been the major objective of development.
The essential needs of a vast numbers of people in developing countries are
that of food, clothing, shelter and employment which are not being met. Beyond
their basic needs these people have legitimate aspirations for an improved
quality of life.
We are living in a world in which resources are limited and
are depleting at a rate that is much higher than the rate of their
replenishment. The time has come to accelerate the progress made in order to
sustain our present as well as future. A communication breach among the
environmental, population, and development assistance groups has kept them
apart for too long, preventing us from being aware of our common pursuit and
realizing the true potential in sustainable development.
